Naples Underground With Kids

Can children visit the Naples underground? Yes: which site suits which age, children's prices, the steps, the flashlight to bring, and the routes with a minimum age.

Updated October 2026

Yes, children can visit every Naples underground site, and most of them love it: the stairs down, the cisterns, the flashlights and the stories of the war make it one of the best things to do in Naples with kids. The question is the age. Napoli Sotterranea takes children of every age, free under 5, and school-age children are asked to bring a small flashlight; the Bourbon Tunnel’s raft route starts at 10. The Napoli Sotterranea guided tour is from US$20 a person (checked October 2026).

Which site for which age

Toddlers and small children. There are a lot of steps, more than 100 down and back up, and no lifts. Napoli Sotterranea lets you leave a pushchair at the entrance and pick it up at the exit, so bring a carrier for a baby. The catacombs are the calmest visit for little ones, wide and short at 45 minutes to an hour, and free for children under 6 on the catacombs’ own walks.

From about 5 to 12. This is the sweet spot for Napoli Sotterranea. Primary and middle-school children should bring a small flashlight, which turns the visit into an expedition, and the optional narrow candlelit passage is the part most children remember. A parent on the TUI small-group tour this spring wrote that the guide captivated their 11-year-old.

From 10. The Bourbon Tunnel’s Adventure route, with a raft ride through a flooded tunnel, is open from age 10 with an adult, and the tunnel asks for an identity document for children aged 10 to 15. It is 20 euros a person at the tunnel’s own desk. The standard Bourbon Tunnel tour, with the old cars, suits any age.

Teenagers. The war shelters and the graffiti on the Spanish Quarters route tend to land with teenagers, and it is a short hour. The Bourbon Tunnel’s Speleo Light route is for over-18s only.

Practical points

Dress children in shoes with grip and bring a sweatshirt: the Spanish Quarters operator gives about 17 degrees below ground all year. The Napoli Sotterranea route is not suitable for pregnant visitors. If a child gets scared, tell the guide; the narrow passage is optional and you can wait at either end with the child.
