Naples Underground, Spaccanapoli and Pizza
How to combine the Naples underground with Spaccanapoli and a pizza: the walking order from Piazza San Gaetano, the guided tours that do it for you, and where the pizza streets are.
Yes, and it is the natural way to do it: Napoli Sotterranea’s entrance is on Piazza San Gaetano, on Via dei Tribunali, one block from Spaccanapoli, and Via dei Tribunali is the street of the old pizzerias. Go down first, walk San Gregorio Armeno to Spaccanapoli after, and eat on Tribunali, all within a few hundred metres. To have a guide do it, TUI Musement’s Naples Top Sights and Underground small-group tour packs an hour underground and the walk into 2.5 hours, from US$33 a person (checked October 2026).

The streets, in order
The old centre of Naples still follows the grid of the Greek city. Its three long streets run east to west: Via dei Tribunali in the middle, and Spaccanapoli one block south, the long straight street that “splits Naples”, called Via Benedetto Croce from Piazza del Gesu Nuovo and then Via San Biagio dei Librai. Via San Gregorio Armeno, the lane of the nativity-figure workshops, joins the two. Piazza San Gaetano sits where San Gregorio Armeno meets Tribunali, with Napoli Sotterranea at number 68 and San Lorenzo Maggiore across the square.
A self-guided afternoon
- Napoli Sotterranea, 1.5 to 2 hours. Book a time on the Napoli Sotterranea tour and start at Piazza San Gaetano. The listing offers a pizza and a soft drink as an option at the end, a margherita or a marinara.
- San Lorenzo Maggiore, optional, an hour. Across the square, the Neapolis Sotterrata is the Roman market street itself, 10 metres down, from US$10.
- San Gregorio Armeno to Spaccanapoli. Walk down the nativity lane to Spaccanapoli and west along it, past Santa Chiara, to Piazza del Gesu Nuovo, about 10 minutes without stops.
- Back to Tribunali for pizza. The famous pizzerias are on Via dei Tribunali, Gino Sorbillo among them at number 32, a few doors from Piazza San Gaetano. Expect a queue at the best-known ones at dinner time.
