How Long Is the Naples Underground Tour?

How long the Naples underground takes: about an hour at most sites, 1.5 to 2 hours on Napoli Sotterranea, and which sites need a booking, with the tour times.

Updated October 2026

Most Naples underground tours take about an hour; Napoli Sotterranea’s listing allows 1.5 to 2 hours, because it adds the Roman theatre to the cisterns. The Spanish Quarters route and the Bourbon Tunnel’s standard route are about an hour each, and the catacombs 45 to 50 minutes on the listing (the catacombs say about an hour). Plan another 15 minutes to arrive early. And yes, book: every visit leaves at a set time, and the Bourbon Tunnel and the catacombs require a booking. The one-hour Spanish Quarters underground tour is from US$20 a person (checked October 2026).

Do you need to book?

The Bourbon Tunnel and the catacombs: yes. Both say booking is required, and the catacombs’ listing adds that a late arrival cannot join a later tour.

Napoli Sotterranea: it helps. The site takes small groups without a reservation, but the wait at the entrance is longest in high season. The GetYourGuide ticket skips the ticket queue, though it is not a priority entrance, and it is non-refundable.

The Spanish Quarters route and San Lorenzo: book a slot. Both run at set times; one visitor to San Lorenzo this October found they needed a time slot, not just a ticket.

Fitting it into a day

An hour underground fits around almost anything. Napoli Sotterranea and San Lorenzo Maggiore share Piazza San Gaetano, so the two together make a two-to-three-hour morning, and Via dei Tribunali has pizza at the end of it. If you would rather a guide put the day together, the **small-group top sights tour is 2.5 hours with an hour underground, and the old town walk with the Roman ruins 3 to 5 hours with lunch as an option; the Spaccanapoli and pizza guide has the walking order. Napoli Sotterranea’s after-hours tour is 2 hours in the evening with a pizza included.
