The Guide
What the Catacombs of San Gennaro Are Like
Wide, high galleries in pale tuff, painted saints and bishops, and a neighbourhood that runs them.
The Catacombs of San Gennaro are the early Christian burial galleries of Naples, begun in the 2nd century as a family tomb and widened from the 4th century around the tomb of St Agrippinus, on two levels cut into the tuff below Capodimonte hill. The galleries are far wider and higher than the catacombs of Rome, because the stone is strong, and they keep frescoes from the 5th and 6th centuries. The visit is sold as the Catacombs of San Gennaro Entry Ticket and Guided Tour, from US$15 a person (checked October 2026), rated 4.6 out of 5 from 8,896 reviews.

What you see
The guide takes you through the lower and upper galleries, which do not sit on top of each other, past rows of burial niches and family chambers. In the underground basilica of St Agrippinus, the first patron saint of Naples, there is still a bishop’s chair carved from the rock. The frescoes are the reason to come: the portraits of two women, Bitalia and Cerula, holding the Gospels, painted in the 5th or 6th century and restored to full colour, and older Roman-style paintings near the original entrance. San Gennaro’s remains were brought here in the 5th century, which gave the catacombs their name; they were later moved, and today they are kept in the cathedral.
Two catacombs on one ticket
Your ticket also covers the Catacombs of San Gaudioso, under the Basilica of Santa Maria della Sanita, a 10-minute walk down the hill, and the basilica itself, and it stays valid for 12 months. San Gaudioso is smaller and stranger, with a Byzantine fresco of the Madonna and Child from the 9th century, rediscovered by chance in 1991. The two sites and the walk between them make a good morning in the Sanita; the catacombs are run from the neighbourhood itself, as part of a project to revive it.

Catacombs or Napoli Sotterranea?
They show different cities. The catacombs are Christian Naples, quiet, wide and painted, a short taxi or bus ride north of the centre. Napoli Sotterranea on Piazza San Gaetano is Greek and Roman Naples and the war, deeper, with more stairs and one narrow passage you can skip. The catacombs are the easier visit for anyone wary of tight spaces. For the Roman city itself, the San Lorenzo Maggiore and Neapolis Sotterrata ticket opens a buried Roman market street on the same square as Napoli Sotterranea.
Practical points
Be at the ticket office 15 minutes before your time; a late arrival cannot join a later tour, and the ticket is valid only for the date and time you book. The catacombs’ own full ticket for the standard visit is 13 euros, and their longer guided walk through the Sanita, the Miglio Sacro, is 19 euros for adults. Hotel pickup is not included.

What Catacombs Visitors Say
"i accidentally boked this thinking it was the Napels underground, but I am so glad I made that mistake because this was such a lovely experience and I got to see something very special. The guides were kind and the pace is good - never too slow or too fast."
"A very good experience. We visited both catacombs, and the guides were very clear and friendly during the sightseeing tour. I would also like to highlight the fact that they told us the history of the neighborhood where these catacombs are located, because, without realizing it, by buying the admission ticket, we are supporting an incredibly important social cause, namely protecting children."
"The tour was very interesting and the guide Nello was excellent! Very charming and friendly guy."
"Interesting, group was a bit large, and the guide was nice, with a good story that was told in a somewhat routine manner."
"Instead of only partner you should have an option for spouse."
"Great. A wonderful discovery of an initiative to rehabilitate the residents of a neighborhood, ongoing since 2006. The tour was very interesting."
"The guide left me delighted. Despite her young age, she was extremely knowledgeable and had excellent command of the language. Her name was Miriana! Well done! 👏 👏 👏 👏"
